Chapter 5

If someone wanted guns, blades, drugs, or car parts, Manny Zork was the guy they went to see. He ran a large south-side operation in the industrial part of the city. He was heavily involved with gunrunning, smuggling, drug trafficking, and had affiliations with almost every gang in town including the outposts surrounding Avalon Wharf. He was surprised when a group of four gang members he had never seen before stepped into his cluttered shop.

As commanded, The Crypts had killed Brett, but the team didn’t want to go back empty-handed, so they thought ripping off Manny would be a fun parting activity.

Manny’s right hand went to his homemade pneumatic, full-auto nail gun that he kept under the desk. It was loaded with a cylindrical magazine that had a capacity for twenty-one five-inch steel spikes and had a mounted laser sight. His trigger finger twitched.

Manny wasn’t a fighter. In fact he was over 50, and packed about as many extra pounds around his waistline. Years of drinking and smoking left him with a rough, jagged voice and two habits that had put him in some very dark places, but he was a good guy if he didn’t shoot you.

Looking through the lenses of his thick coke-bottle glasses, he addressed the four strangers.

“You guys looking for something?”

Mad Dog stepped forward and Manny’s magnified eyes immediately focused on the Crypt’s large spiked bat that was the equivalent to a kid’s safety blanket.

“We were just passing by and saw your wares,” said Mad Dog. “Looks like you got some things we need.”

Manny smiled at the thought of making more credits. Business had been slow the past few days. “Well, customer satisfaction has always been my motto. What can I do ya for?”

Jacky looked at a shelf to the right that was filled with explosives and RPG’s. “Let’s get some of these babies.”

Mad Dog shook his head. “What do you have in the back?” he asked, pointing at the door behind the counter.

“Why don’t you come take a look for yourself?” Manny suggested, as he removed his hand from his nail gun and waved the Crypts on through.

They followed Manny into his warehouse and they all smiled greedily behind their bandanas except for Jacky. He smiled without his.

A box labeled Xenthili sitting on the floor just inside the door caught Jacky’s attention. “Mad Dog, he’s got my fix. I want it!”

Manny bent down and sliced open the box with the straight razor he kept in his pocket, then reached in for a pinch for Jacky to sample.

“That’s the best Xenthili you’ll ever have. I’ve got many repeat customers for that strain.”

Jacky put it on the concrete floor of the warehouse. He fumbled in his trench coat, then pulled out some matches and lit it. He inhaled deeply, filling his lungs with the thick blue-gray smoke. The effects were immediate.

“This is good shit, Mad Dog. Rokit. You’re gonna want some, baby. You’re gonna want it all!”

“A box of that for my friend here,” Mad Dog said.
